A 3D-Printed Lampshade

Oooh this 3D printing lark is getting more exciting isn’t it. My children are desperate to own a 3D printer and I imagine by the time they are in their twenties it won’t be such an outlandish idea. In the meantime we can sit back and watch the technology improve.

Late last week, I was sent pictures of this rather fabulous 3D-printed lampshade, the result of a collaboration between Plumen, makers of designer low energy lightbulbs and Formaliz3d (clever name that isn’t it).

It currently fits the smaller Plumen models (001 and 002) but will soon be adapted to take the larger one. It was designed with the gently curving shapes of the bulb in mind and fits and shows it off to perfection.

Nicholas Roope, the creative director at Plumen, who initiated the collaboration, said: “This project realised the promise of object printing. We saw the beautiful Rumble range online, made contact with Formaliz3d and just a few days later printed design concepts started arriving at our studio that we could test and experience together with our bulbs. Sometimes designs take years to produce. Our bulb designs certainly do. So what a thrill it has been to see this product evolve and resolve at the speed of light.”

The Kayan lamp was shown at Milan last week and is available to buy from Plumen for £99.95. You can choose the colour of the cord from red or black and white.

  1. my son’s school has recently go a 3D printer and i have to say I am as impressed with it as he is! He doesn’t stop going on about it.
would love to get him one of these for his birthday…..however, I think although he would be suitably impressed he may still prefer the same value in lego for now….
will have to put it on my wish list instead!
