Black and White Rug

Now you might feel that you’ve seen enough black and white rugs. That the trend for Beni Ourani rugs is over but, I’m afraid, I have news for you. It ain’t over till it’s over. The patterns may change but if you’ve invested in one like this, or were thinking of doing so but afraid it was too late, it isn’t. There are new ones coming out all the time, like these two from Ferm Living, which aren’t even in the shops yet.

It’s a bit like skinny jeans, people stuck to their bootlegs for ages thinking it was just a Kate Moss thing, but in the end the skinny won through. We’ve been in ’em for years and we ain’t going back now.

That is to say; some of you young things might flirt with a Seventies flare but I was there the first time round and let me tell you, I won’t be returning.

So black and white rugs. I might venture to say that the chevron is over. But only for the really, really picky. I mean unless the editors of House & Garden, Elle Deco and Living etc are all coming round for tea at the same time, I think you needn’t worry. The black and white’s the key.

It’s classic and it goes with everything. So you can change your walls, your sofa, your curtains and your cushions and the black and white rug will remain. Perfect for those with small people, it won’t show the spilt milk so no need to cry (sorry) and for those of you who drink white wine. I am a red wine drinker so tend towards the Persian variety of rug as it matches my alcohol of choice, but I am considering one of these for the loft conversion. It is, in theory, a place for work so there will be no need of alcohol up there. Well, only of the fizzy variety to celebrate all the lovely new contracts I shall win thanks to having such a fantastic workspace. And fizz is white, hence no stain.

See, black and white rugs, winning. In fact, I have just specified a black and white stair carpet for a client who is thrilled with the idea of bringing a little drama to her hall. It’s this one from Alternative Flooring and I suggested painting her handrail orange and perhaps even binding the edges of the runner in orange to bring in a little fizz.
