Designed by Niels Datema, the glasses were inspired by the chemicals in water: “To our naked eye tap water looks like a clean and clear liquid, but every glass of water contains numerous different chemicals,” he says.

“I selected five of these chemicals and used them to oxidise steel. The combination of the steel rings and a water jug form an illustration of the effect of tap water chemicals on steel.”

Still never mind all that. Here they are. You can finally buy them from Rowen and Wren. They cost £16 a glass and £28 for the carafe and they’re gorgeous. Race you to the check out.

One word of warning: they look like brass but they are in fact copper. It probably doesn’t matter but I’m being accurate so that you don’t buy something you didn’t want. Although both gorgeous either way.

  1. Interesting thinking behind these. Glad you mentioned the brass, because I’ve never seen copper that colour! He mentions “steel” rings in the process – which are the steel rings?
