Bubble Light

Now I do try to be practical here. The daily Object of Design tries hard to adhere to the William Morris beautiful and useful school of thought and, I try, where I can, honestly I do, to also keep it affordable. But sometimes I see something so gorgeous that it just has to be included and this, people, is that. I don’t even know care how much it costs. I’m probably never going to own it. Although I wish I was.

It’s a light that was inspired by floating soap bubbles and I can’t think of a more brilliant place for it than hanging low by the basin. Or the kitchen sink. Actually it would make me smile at the end of the sofa. Now I come to think of it, such are the powers of this light to make one smile that, if you compare it with the cost of therapy, it’s probably very affordable.

It was designed by the Anglo-Italian team Giopato & Coombes and inspired by the lightness of soap bubbles as a metaphor for the emptiness of light.

“For few seconds, in front of us, we were surrounded by hundreds of soap bubbles. It was a magical moment with their formal simplicity it was beautiful and immediate: we wanted to crystallize this moment, when the bubbles grow until they touch each other, just before exploding! So this was the beginning.”

The bulb is suspended between the bubbles so the reflection of light is amplified through the space. It is a double-sided LED so that it throws light both up and down.

You can choose between four or six bubbles and you can read more about it here . It is, as I say, just a beautiful light that I would love to own. And that would make me happy. As I say, cheaper than therapy.

  1. Kate this is just beautiful. I don’t want to ask them how much it is as I know I won’t be able to afford it (got to buy a new bathroom after all). But it is heavenly. I will just look at the pictures for now!
