Contemporary Double Sofa Bed (Part 47)

When this blog is not being Mad About the House it could double up as Mad About the Sofabed. As regular readers will know, there is an ongoing search and saga when it comes to finding the right sofabed.

sofa 1

I recently bought this one from Ikea. It looks great in the room. It fits the space beautifully. It seats four people comfortably. There really is also room for “a little one”. It was cheap too. But, and this is a fairly sizeable sort of But. Might almost be a Butt in fact. Because, dear God, it’s not comfortable. No sir it isn’t. It is, for anyone who might be interested, the Friheten. On balance (and an extra £300) the Vilasun might be better as it has arms at both end.

I mean to be fair, what did we expect for around 400 quid. And, to be reasonable, it’s nothing that couldn’t be sorted out with a mattress topper. Although that might involve storage issues. So I’m not complaining. Much. At least I won’t be when I’ve been back to my own bed for a night to recover. And it would be only fair to say that Himself said he slept beautifully on it. So it’s just me. In what we will henceforth refer to as The Princess and the Pea Syndrome.

And the point is that the hunt for the sofa bed continues. Because that thing ain’t going up into the loft. I don’t care how well he slept. That can be the spare bed for children type sleepovers. Their young bones can take it. And besides they’re awake all night chatting anyway so it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference what they sleep on.

Back to the drawing board. A quick reminder of boxes to be ticked:

Stylish, contemporary, double, affordable. See that’s only four boxes. That shouldn’t even be tricky. Anyway, next on the list to be investigated is this:

Bearing in mind its main function is as sofa rather than bed. So it needs to look good as such. And I don’t really like sofas that don’t have arms as I like to lean. But you can buy an extra cushion for this which gives it a slightly more contemporary look and makes it more daybed than sofa. Which, as you know. I like.

And when folded out it measures 200cm by 160cm which is fine. The only downside is this:

Yes, it’s back to the mattress on the floor. But we can just pretend we’re being Japanese or something can’t we? That’s assuming we can still get up from this low down these days.

Who knew it would be this hard? This one is from onedeko and is currently on sale so it’s less than £1,000. It’s Danish too. That ought to count for something oughtn’t it?

But it turns out this hunt still ain’t over. This sofabed will work find in my loft where it’s an office-type scenario. I have a client who needs a sofa bed in her sitting room that must be a comfortable sofa 99 per cent of the time. And then a bed. Possibly for parents – who may have my Princess issues. The hunt continues…

looks wise i think it is fab. re comfort not so sure.
i’m still kicking myself as i bought a very gorgeous looking sofa from there 2 yrs ago (I know it’s 2 yrs because i’ve just finished paying for it) and dear goodness it is not comfortable…….. still looks amazing and i think it will forever as nobody likes sitting on it so it will look brand new for the next 10 years!

    1. I think you’ve probably answered your own question! If the sofa isn’t comfortable what chance the bed will be….I shall keep hunting. And am also looking for a client so we should compare notes….

    1. Of course the one I like best here is a single… typical. Designers seem to got it nailed when it comes to funky single sofa beds but doubles are proving trickier. They’re all just a bit more conventional than I would like. I’ll get one in the end…
