Contemporary Steel Furniture

A good shelf is a good thing – as the billions of shelfie posts on instagram can testify. This is a good shelf. And what’s more, as it’s not a built- in shelf you can either move it from room to room as the fancy takes you, or from house to house if you rent.

Sometimes sticking shelves into available alcoves is the just obvious, and boring – or shall we say simply practical – solution. Sometimes it’s fun to consider a shelf as a piece of furniture in its own right. This one, from LOVEThESIGN is so sculptural that it would work even if you didn’t put anything on it at all.

It would be brilliant in a bathroom, with a few rolled up towels and your more attractive bottles of shampoo and perfume. You could even add a small basket to  the bottom shelf and keep the loo roll looking presentable. It wouldn’t be out of place in a bedroom and, of course, in your living room. Most of us wouldn’t have room to put it in the kitchen but it would look great in there.

It’s made from steel by a father and son duo who are based in Italy. This is the only place you can buy the range in the UK. In addition to this set of shelves there is also a set of modular wall storage that you can configure how you like and which would work really well in an office. Think of the levels of procrastination you could achieve with these. Hours of fun rearranging and styling.

The range also includes wine storage, different styles of bookcases that can be grouped together and a side table. Colours include black, white and rust and prices start at £124 for the side table, with the top bookshelf, Tiche,  costing £456. The one above, Rettangola, is £404 while there is a much larger shelving unit for over a thousand.

The company has seen fit to label various units as for bathrooms and bedrooms but I don’t think you have to take any notice of that, you should just put the one you like in the place you like. Which, in my case, is the rust version. Some of them come with magnets so you can stick postcards and useful stuff onto the front – undoubtedly practical – probably less attractive and they can all be wall-mounted with a single screw making them safe for small people to have in their rooms too.

  1. Sounds good list of furniture for home. The storage space was a big issue in our home. So, I have been also using shelving to store various stuff and de clutter my home.

  2. The shelves are nice but I am crazy about the walls, especially in the first photo. Do you know what they are made of? Do you know anything about them?

  3. Fab. I have been thinking about alcove shelving – as you say practical but a bit boring. I do like the steels shelves – 1st photo. Another one for the list….

    1. I can’t seem to find this on the lovethesign website. What’s the name of the father and son’s company/ brand name Kate?
