Copper Glasses

It’s fair to say I see a lot of stuff. A lot. And it’s true to say that while I try never to post something that I wouldn’t have in my own house – given elastic walls and a never-ending budget – I don’t buy that much of what I post – given non-flexible walls and a fairly restrained budget.

But every now and then I see something that is instant attraction and today this is that. I saw the copper glasses and carafe pictured below and wanted to buy the set immediately. Then I started investigating and discovered the carafes above and I loved the story behind them.

serax winter 2014-5

Designed by Niels Datema, the glasses were inspired by the chemicals in water: “To our naked eye tap water looks like a clean and clear liquid, but every glass of water contains numerous different chemicals,” he says.

“I selected five of these chemicals and used them to oxidise steel. The combination of the steel rings and a water jug form an illustration of the effect of tap water chemicals on steel.”

Gorgeous aren’t they?

I emailed Niels last week to ask him about pictures and he told me that the oxidised copper wasn’t suitable for production so he changed it to the copper you see above. They are now produced by Serax. However, there is a slight issue here in that Serax only sell to business customers – come on my readers who own stores can you please order in a whole lot of them? I have contacted them to ask if there is anyway that the rest of us can get hold of these glasses.

Then I spoke to Niels who said he is in Mallorca for a few months but is going to try and find a way of buying through his site. Basically, anyone who wants the set let me know in the comments below and I will see what I can arrange with Niels.

When wandering around Niels’s site I also found this rather wonderful Artisan breadset which has everything you need to make bread at home including this ceramic bowl for baking it in. The set comes with an instruction book and would make rather a good present wouldn’t it?

Or you can choose these simple breadspoons. The size is pre-measured and the ingredients are written on the handles. Then all you need, as Niels says, is your own two hands.

They would actually look lovely hanging on the wall wouldn’t they?

Happy Sunday everyone. I’m off to do a little spot of armchair shopping….

  1. Hi, I have fallen in love with the carafe and glasses.. how do I go about getting any?? ..HELP ! .. would love 1 carafe and 6 glasses.

  2. So here is the list of UK stockists. Now, in theory, all these places have stocked or do stock the glasses and carafe and, according to Serax, they will all place and order if you ask. Having said that, they ALL appear to be out of stock at the moment. Niels says the prices are €15 for the glass and €25 for the carafe.
So, I think the best thing for now is that those of you who want to contact these shops directly, now that you have the prices can do so. Those that still want but can’t get from the shops come back to me on [email protected] and when I have gathered a group of you – let’s say one week from now 1 December – then I will go to Niels directly and tell him that I have your orders.
I’m sorry that this is turning into a whole saga but am sure we can sort it out for those that wish to stay the course!

This is the mesage from Serax:
For the moment we just had 1 delivery of the Copper Chemistry range. So it was sold out by many different customers instantly. (many different countries)
Now a lot of shops have order it but it is still not available at there shop for the customers to buy.
So for the moment (As it is new collection) it is not very easy to track down a shop that still has it.

But here are some shops you can use for publication in the UK ( I hope that is where you are from?)
I know for sure that these shops will place a new order if they are out of stock and customers ask for it.

Niels also sent me this message with these addresses and the prices and added that soon the whole list will be online and published on his website and Facebook page.

The official prices I got are €15,- for the little glass and €25,- for the carafe.

  3. Googled “copper chemistry carafe” having seen in Elle would be very interested if you can source. Agree with comment that is frankly teasing to have in domestic magazine when only for trade.

  4. i’ve also been looking for the serax carafe and glasses -i’d love to buy them if possible!

    Thanks, Caroline

  5. I saw the copper glasses in Elle Deco and planned to purchase until I realised trade only. A domestic magazine, it should really be clear before it gets readers all excited about something they can’t have!! Or can they? I would like to purchase, price dependent as others have said.

  6. I’m also very interested in the copper chemistry carafe and glasses, would love to find out how to buy them!

  7. I would love the set two! I saw them in Elle Decoration for £19 for the carafe and £10 for the glasses…

  8. I’d love the glass and carafe set….. price dependant! Please keep me posted if they become available to the public. Thank you. x

  9. Depending on the price I would love the artisan bread making set and the spoons. Please let me know if it is possible.

  10. Hi there… I love you site. Thank you so much!! I would definitely be interested in the glasses!! Please let me know if and when we can order them.

Thanks again for your inspirational work!
