I Feel Smug Shop

No, not me (well not all the time!) but the name of a shop. It’s in north London (cue more jokes about smugness from those not currently residing in this – I mean that – part of the capital). Anyway, it’s Saturday so it’s lovely to have a virtual browse round a shop if you’re not in the area and if you are, well you can pop in and do it IRL then can’t you?

SMUG was set up by Lizzie Evans, who remembers spending her pocket money in Islington as a little girl. Now as an interior and graphic designer, she has created a  light and airy designed space filled with 1950s furniture, handmade toys, gorgeous stationery, quirky kitchenware, and chic ceramics.

The space retains its old waxed boards and rusty manhole covers, but includes sheets of glass as balustrades and covering parts of the floor, allowing light to penetrate the downstairs.

As well as designing, sourcing for and running the shop, Lizzie continues to work as an interior and graphic designer. She created the SMUG brand including the design of the website and has also branded the Lodeveans Collection, a contemporary art collection which hangs its art on the walls of Smug.

There’s a huge collection from pieces designed exclusively for the store to carefully curated items from other designers many of whom (and this makes a refreshing change) you won’t have seen before.

Go on pour another cup of coffee – it’s the weekend – and have a little virtual wander round.
