Ikea Villstad Chair

Well there’s no getting away from the fact that the loft conversion is fully underway. There is no roof. There is a lot of banging. And a lot of weather checking (by me at least; the builders seem very relaxed).

As I may have already mentioned (once or twice) the finished room will be mainly white with exposed brickwork and rafters and reclaimed floorboards. I’m quite keep to leave the steels exposed and paint those too – perhaps in a zingy colour – but I have not won total approval on that yet.

And so we turn to furniture. The plan is not to have much. A built-in desk running the entire length of the wall, by which I mean width of the house, that sits under the window. We’re not having full length glass doors – it’s not like you can go out of them and windows will bring in just as much light. Then there will be the sofa bed… And a floor lamp, low table and I had thought that was about it.

Then I saw these chairs from Ikea. And they’re on the board because that gorgeous colour will look fabulous with all the black and white and the metal legs will fit with the slightly industrial look up there. For what it’s worth I don’t want the office chair or the highback armchair. It’s the easy chair for me. In this colour. It’s £140.

What do you think? I can feel my heart singing already when I look at this colour. It’s the same as my aquamarine engagement ring.

  1. Hi Kate – Just wondering how did you go with this chair? I was thinking of getting them for my living room. Thanks.

      1. Thanks Kate. it’s just I am trying to find something to go with my big bulky 3 seater recliner in my living room and just don’t know what goes with it. Then I found you and this post. I was just curious if you have a post about decorating with bulky sofa?

  2. Late to the conversation but I discovered this chair at IKEA today and holy moly, it is delightfully comfortable.

  3. I’ve been eyeing these up myself but is that a velvet…didn’t realise it came in that lovely colour.

    1. I’m not sure if it’s actual velvet – it may be a lookalike but it has a nap – the cleaning instructions say to hoover with the soft brush attachment. I will have to go to Ikea soon – I shall investigate.

  4. As usual I agree with your great taste. Fab colour and also same as my engagement ring. But are they comfortable or don’t we care in the interest of beauty? Is there a ” no pain no gain” phrase in the world of interiors?

    Good luck with the attic.

    1. Absolutely not – we’re not buying if it’s not comfortable. Having said that – there are required degrees of comfort. I wouldn’t put these in my sitting room where I might want to sit through a two hour film. But for an office type space where you will be sitting for shorter periods of time, it’s a different scenario. I intend to try them out and see….

  5. Hi Kate – you will be told that the steel work has to be wrapped in 2 layers of plasterboard because of fire. This is generally true. I think the only way to have exposed steel work is to paint it in intumescent paint, and then overpaint it with your zingy colours. I have unboxed many of my rsjs and they look fantastic. Many of the intumescent paints can be like painting with plaster and leave very deep brush strokes. (certainly the one I used – Jotun Steelmaster 60WB Water Based Intumescent Fire Proof Paint)
    good luck!
