Industrial Meccano Furniture

What about this then? Do you know what it is? Yes it really is. Funiture.Made.From.Meccano. It’s so exciting I can’t believe it hasn’t existed before now. Based on the popular children’s toy sets, the pieces have been enlarged and can be put together in a range of ways to create tables, consoles, desks and chairs.

Meccano Home was created by the contemporary furniture retailer, Vincent Boutillier and engineer Christophe Piquemal. Their idea was shared with two designers, Cécile Makowski and Thomas Hourdain, who came up with an easy to build, expandable furniture concept – basically they made the pieces lifesize.

There are 21 assembly parts, which are available in a range of nine paint colours. Each of these modules allows the user to construct a range of living room furniture that is entirely adjustable in size, concept and colour as lifestyles and needs change. A range of children’s furniture including desks, chairs and blackboards is also available.

Like the childhood sets, all the modules have been made with that perforation hole system that makes them all compatible with one another, but unlike the originals, the nuts are also finished in a range of eight colours to match or provide contrast to the different furniture creations. It’s completely flexible. For example, the legs of a chair can be used to build a coffee table or by buying an additional single table top and fitting kit, the user can turn a square table into a rectangular one that sits twice as many people.

I’m so excited by this I can barely type. Can you imagine just being able to remake the furniture whenever you need? Extra guest for dinner? Just knock up a new chair. Extend the table. Get the child to build its own homework desk. I can just imagine finishing off that (usually dangerous) third glass of wine and thinking woo hoo let’s rebuild the sitting room. What could possibly go wrong?

I’m so buying the whole set. At the moment Holloways of Ludlow are the exclusive UK and Northern Ireland retailers and prices start at £130.
