Mad About … Unfitted Bathrooms

I’ve always thought there’s something terribly attractive about bathrooms that don’t look like bathrooms. By which I mean ones that look like they belong in some crumbling Venetian Palazzo – all high ceilings, chandeliers and flagstone floors.

It’s not that I’m against a modern, sleek bathroom at all, after all they probably work better; more insulated, underfloor heating, draught proof etc. All the stuff that you actually want, and need, in there.

But, for the sheer romance and beauty of the space, this week we are mostly mad about unfitted bathrooms. And, judging by the rise in popularity of the freestanding bath, I’m not alone in this.

So here are few bathrooms to inspire you. It’s basically all bit Rough Luxe .

My perfect bathroom would have a frameless shower enclosure/wet area. High ceilings with a chandelier, a Persian rug instead of a bathmat, a table for a vase of flowers, a glass of wine and the radio and a battered leather armchair to drape my towel over. Oh and don’t forget the freestanding bath, perhaps from Drummonds.

What about this for the ultimate luxury bathroom. His and hers baths. Although I might have put the taps at opposite ends which would make for better chatting.

But, in a vain attempt to inject a little reality here, for those that don’t have space for a freestanding bath, you can still bring a little bit of that look into your bathroom with these customised basin units.

See the panelling, which I wrote about recently, and the stand, which is an old cupboard that needs space for plumbing and taps drilled into it.

Here, a slab of concrete has had a piece of wood laid over the top. Perhaps the idea below might be easier to incorporate. In fact I think I might start looking out for an old table right away. Those stone mirrors and the pendant lights are fabulous too aren’t they?

The bathroom below has also used some great industrial lighting. As long as you use the right fittings there should be no problem with these sorts of lights in a bathroom.

And here’s another table that has been repurposed as a basin stand.

So, unfitted bathrooms. What do you think?

  1. Beautiful selection of bathrooms. There is always so much to choose from when re-decoration your bathroom, it can be difficult choosing a suit that is perfect for you!
