Moomins and Hattifatteners

Seriously who doesn’t love a Moomin? And with the release of their first film on Friday, I thought you might like to see these wonderful lights which were launched to mark the centenary of Tove Janssen last year.

These are the Hattifatteners – silent beings that wander in large herds. The only thing that interests them is reaching the horizon – and once they reach it, they simply continue their journey.

During thunderstorms, they become highly charged with electricity and it’s a good idea to avoid them. You can sense their presence as an electrical charge in the air. At other times they’re harmless.

I have three Moomin mugs and the Hattifatteners is my favourite. I drink my morning coffee from it and am also often best avoided as highly charged at that time of day – although secretly I like to think of them as more Jazz hands than Dementor.

The range also includes the Snork Maiden and Moomintroll both of whom are slightly jollier characters, although the Snork Maiden changes her mind a lot which annoys people. I have that mug too.

They’re available from Urban Icon, an online store with a fantastic and unusual range of stuff for home and garden. These lights costs £200 but there are lots of other cool things like these pendant lights which have a sort of 2D effect.

Or what about this Eiffel paper stool which comes flat packed in a sweet cotton bag and costs £60. Might be perfect for the loft – it also comes in aluminium – and I have the perfect little slot for it in my loft by the bookshelves.
