New Norm Tableware

shades of grey bowls

There has been a slow and steady search for new crockery in The Mad House. Our current set came from a seconds shop in The Potteries and is, I think, Portmeirion without the flowers on. It’s a lovely ivory shade but I’m not wild about the shape of the plates. I know #firstworldproblems and all that but I have been keeping an eye on what is out there when we eventually get round to replacing it.

I don’t really know what I want except I do know I don’t want it to be white. After the warm ivory of the current set that feels very cold and, given that everything in our kitchen is on open shelves, I do need to consider style as well as substance. Form as well as function. Not that I wouldn’t anyway but that’s my excuse.

I came across this yesterday and I think I might be rather in love. It’s Danish and was designed by Norm Architects for Menu and comes in these rather gorgeous shades of grey and blush and white as well. I rather like the idea of mixing it up as in these photographs as it would look so pretty on the shelves.

You can only buy it in one place in the UK and that’s at Future and Found. They have some in stock but will order more for you direct from the suppliers. I’m completely taken with the idea of a lid for the bowls although in reality I’m not sure that’s necessary.

In Denmark it is the crockery of choice for a restaurant in Copenhagen called Höst, which won the 2013 best design restaurant award, I’ve no idea what the food is like as the menu is in Danish but the pictures are certainly very pretty.

You should also know that the whole set is dishwasher, oven and microwave proof which is always helpful.

What do you think? My hunch is that a few years ago we would have baulked at the idea of grey plates but now we have accepted it on our walls and we know that it makes pictures and artwork look great, why not food? I think this might be the way to go.

  1. Kate, this crockery is lovely and highly photogenic. It should look wonderful in your kitchen and at the table. Cheers, Ardith

  2. Thanks Kate- we are in the market for new crockery at the moment..so that’s great timing! It looks really nice, but we may have to go for the more affordable Jason atherton ‘social’ range which I quite like…

  3. Beautiful and somehow really serene in shape and tone. I love the look of the lidded bowls, so: if the thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right – first time. Cliche city in South Woodford today!

  4. I love these bowls, though over on our shop we’re channelling a more rustic look right now – our pottery might not be glam enough for you but does fulfil the form and function duty, with a great backstory and ethics to boot.

  5. This is so lovely. Thanks for sharing! I have to sit on my hands when it comes to crockery so as not to snap up everything in sight, I suspect I have a bit if a fetish. Aren’t the lids on the bowls in fact plates? All very niftily stacked, which is very pleasing.

  6. Someone else to look at is Sue Pryke at suepryke.com. In addition to her bone china which is a creamy white and not at all cold to look at, she makes an earthenware range in a natural cream, grey and indigo. Her ‘new bone china’ range goes into the dishwasher and I love it. I use it everyday. I believe she has worked for large design companies in the past and now has her own studio and works with small factories and other studios in the uk.

  7. check out pottery by lars soendergaard http://www.soendergaarddesign.co.uk – his work is amazing and he will work with you to customise shades and tweak designs! . i met him about 8 years ago have the inge design in various shades of grey depending on which pieces some deep burgundy and cobalt accessories and love them!
