Sunday is the perfect day for a virtual wonder round a new shop discovery. There’s a bit more time to linger over breakfast and you can stroll around and see what’s in store without having to take your slippers off. This week, I received an email from David telling me about Kukka, a small British design house creating products using sustainable materials.
Kukka was set up in 2010 by Israeli/British designer Rona Meyuchas Koblenz who graduated in Milan in 1999 and has worked with some big names include Luceplan and Bisazza. She then moved to London and worked on projects for Nobu and Yauatcha as well as the odd luxury yacht!
The name, Kukka has no meaning in her mother tongue but is simply one of the first sounds a baby makes. Rona eventually named her grandmother kukka Myriam. “Our kukka is a sweet childhood memory,” she says. “But through our customers and supporters we have learned that it has different meanings in different languages. That is my meaning.”
There are some great pieces on the site. I love the round wall and table lights shown above which allow a soft light to filter out from behind. You could put white on black to make a statement or white on white so that it almost disappears and just a gentle light escapes.
Or what about this – which is just £25 – made from flameproof fabric with snap fasteners you simply fix it round a light bulb and shape it with your hands. Or you can fix several together and make something larger.
There are lots of other great things on there so do go for a browse. I will leave you with the freakish clock with is another of my favourites.
Have a lovely day. For those of you who are not reading on the televisual equivalent of Dave, enjoy the bank holiday weekend. For the rest of you, we had a bank holiday, we loved it, now we’re back at work.
