Object of Design: Florian Schmid

round mirror integrated dressing table

I first came across the German designer Florian Schmid when researching a feature on concrete for The Financial Times (you can read it here if you feel so inclined) and then I went back for a closer look.

Born in 1984 ( I know! *Weeps slightly*) he has already won numerous awards for his work and this is one of his projects that I particularly like. The round mirror/table is called Carla, designed to be used while sitting and the rectangle is Carlo, to be used while standing.

A flat wooden board, resting on two legs, cuts the mirror along the vertical and divides the object into two halves. On the inside, the narrow shelf space provides room for accessories, jewellery and so on.

There’s also a barely visible cable guide behind the shelf, so you can keep phones, iPads, kindles etc. Schmid also points out that due to its reflection in the mirror, the shelf seems larger than it actually is, and even seems to stand on 3 legs and to lean on an artificial window.

The collection has been put into production for Zeitraum. Do you like it? I have never had a dressing table although I love the idea of them. However, last time I was in a hotel room where there was such a thing I discovered that I am now physically incapable of putting on mascara while sitting down. It just didn’t feel right so I think I would probably have Carlo rather than his sister Carla although the round mirror appeals to me slightly more than the rectangle.

Oh decisions decisions, it’s much harder to spend this fantasy (non-existent) money than you might imagine you know.

  1. I do love your posts, they brighten up my inbox every day :0)
This fella’s design is a superb twist on my much dreamed about dressing table. But now you’ve mentioned mascara I’m wondering what else I wouldn’t use it for, that I hadn’t thought about…
