Objects of Design #174: White Leather Laundry Bin

Laundry bins. We all need them and yet they are the very antithesis of glamour. Except when they’re not, and I was quite delighted when I found this leather one, which is part of the new autumn winter collection from Next.

Now, yes I grant you it’s not real leather but given that it’s 56cm tall and 43cm wide, that would be a lot of cow and it would cost a lot more than £65. At which point some of you might baulk at paying that much for storing the dirty washing. I know this because I featured a real leather version from Habitat last year. It is unquestionably a thing of beauty but my husband expressly forbade me from buying it at that price (whisper it: £130) and while I take umbrage at being forbidden to do anything, I can also see that that is a lot of money.

And yes I know that £65 is also a lot of money but it’s half (ish) of the other one and if you think it’s ridiculous then don’t buy it.

My lovely water hyacinth laundry baskets are now falling apart, after many years faithful service (and no small amount of abuse from Enid cat) and I think this would probably last for many years. There is also the small detail that it has a lid and, as the mother of an-about-to-be-teenage boy, I can tell you that that is no bad thing.

  1. Ok, I have to admit that I’m not usually a fan of Next, but this is rather nice! Very nice, actually. Having said that, my laundry basket isn’t quite falling apart just yet and I would still need a pretty good excuse to buy a new one for £65…

  2. That looks great. The only other leather one I have seen is at the White Company which is stunning but costs too much for a laundry basket for me. Thanks for the heads up. Sam
