Objects Of Design #23: Smiths 10 Second Knife Sharpener

Part of the Kitchen Essentials Series

In much the same way that we have been through several and various potato peelers over the years, our drawers have played host to a number of knife sharpeners. This has been, for us at least, the best. Although as Smith’s themselves would say: “The best sharpener is the one that does what you want it to do.” And you can’t really argue with that.

This one doesn’t involve any sort of “knack” which is a bonus in a house of left-handers as everyone seems to be able to sharpen all the knives without any bother. And, as we have the rather bad habit of chucking knives in the dishwasher, they do tend to get blunt quite often so we are at least practiced at sharpening them. Just three or four pulls through should do it and it has a non-slip base, which is a small, and unforeseen bonus. Do make sure you pull the blade in one direction and don’t saw it back and forth.
