Objects of Design #285: Five of the best Sofa Beds

I have been on a quest for the best sofa bed for years now. It needs to be contemporary and a bit cool. Comfortable enough for a family to sit and watch a film but also convenient enough to manoeuvre the bed part.

I have found great looking sofas that convert in the wrong way so that one person has to clamber over the back to get out in the night to go to the loo. No good for the in-laws.

I have found beds that are so easy to fold out and back again but like sitting on a bed of nails when it comes to watching television.

I own a very elderly (and cheap) one from a large Swedish superstore that has served us well for ten years but has, perhaps due to three house moves, become slightly bent, and converting it from bed to sofa involves a LOT of swearing. And no small amount of sweating too. Not to mention the fear that all my fingers will be broken in one fell swoop.

In short, it’s a tough search. These are five of my current favourites, although, I have to admit that Arthur, the handsome mid-century modern chap above is my favourite. Perhaps in the New Year – after the guests have left but when the sales are on – I shall actually buy him.

  1. Hey, thanks for this! I’ve been looking for stylish sofabeds for a while. Well, since yesterday. Anyway, thanks to google, I found your blog so it’s taken me less than 3 minutes to find one I like.

    Talk about useful!!

    5 Stars.

  2. The black mid century modern one from pelikan online is my fav too – i really like the way the wood warms up the sofa. Once my kids have grown out the spilling stuff on the sofa phase I might go down this route too, until then its leather all the way for me unfortunately.
