Objects of Design #251: Monochrome Throws and Blankets

Don’t you love these blankets? They’re the new collection by Rafa Kids.

But I say never mind the children, I’d be very happy with these in my own bedroom frankly. They’re made in Finland by Japanese designer Masaru Suzuki.

the monochrome blanket looks good on both sides

In addition to this rather handsome sheep, which as you can see, is reversible, there is a rather splendid leopard and a field of dots.

I suppose the dots is the most grown-up version but I think I like the sheep best.

the leopard is one of several monochrome designs

They measure 130cm by 180cm which is a really good size and cost from €85 (for some reason the leopard is €10 more) and are made in a Finnish textile factory which opened in 1917.

I have been researching Finnish design recently for a feature I am writing and was told that many Finnish families have their own looms and make their own rag rugs from left over fabric – clothes that children have grown out of and old curtains etc. I think that’s such a great idea and I love that these blankets have also been made by a traditional company.
