Objects of Design #36: Jumbo Oak Coat Hook

Most of us are guilty of overloading our coathooks so that either it becomes impossible to find the item of clothing you are looking for, or the whole thing just falls on the floor and everything is trampled on until someone can be bothered to pick it all up again. That’s why banisters make such popular resting places for coats because they are large and don’t fall over.

So the solution is to a) get a bigger hook and b) be more disciplined. Yes, you do. On the basis that no-one is wearing more than three coats in one week, then make sure the rest are stored upstairs in a wardrobe and just keep the main ones downstairs. And buy an extra one for school bags so they’re not taking up precious floor space.

These ones, which are made from solid oak, are pleasingly large and sculptural and can also be personalised. Don’t scoff: when little Jimmy’s peg is always empty and the dog’s curled up on a cosy pile of stuff underneath, you’ll know who hasn’t been tidying up after themselves.

They’re 33cm high, stick out about 15cm and there’s a discount if you buy two or more. What are you waiting for?
