Now I must confess I’m not a great one for candles. I like the idea of it for sure, but I’m always so frightened that they’ll fall over or I’ll forget to blow them out that I tend not light them in the first place.

Having said that, I’m a big fan of candlesticks and these are particularly fine. They’re made by Bronx-born artist Perry Gargano and would look great curling round a few fat candles.

Come to think of it I may have to rethink my candle policy. After all, the Danes light candles all the time to create hygge, which loosely translates as cosiness. And now that it’s spring (if not yet summer) the idea of sitting in the garden, sipping a glass of wine as dusk falls, with a couple of candles guttering gently in the breeze is an appealing one.

No, be quiet, don’t spoil the fantasy. Well we can change it to hot chocolate if you really want. And throw in a fire pit. And a blanket. But we’re keeping the candles.
