I don’t know about you but I have always loved the American habit of using large brown paper bags to cart things back from the supermarket. Leaving aside its eco-friendly credentials, it’s much easier to carry a heavy bag under one arm rather than having several plastic versions cutting into your hand.

These bags, which are made from recycled paper, have taken that idea one stage further and have been reinvented as rather chic storage. Use them for toys, waste paper from the office, loo rolls and even to hide an ugly plant pot.

They cost £8.50 from Peastyle or you can buy a set of five for £37.50 and they’re re-usable too. I think I might use mine as a laundry basket as my rather elderly basket is unravelling faster than Enid Cat can unpick it.

I have to admit I’m also rather taken with the idea of casually telling my father-in-law about them and hearing him shriek “£8.50 for a paper bag?”.
