Print Your Own 3D Lamp

Dazzle1

As stories about 3D printing and its possibilities gather pace I have been reading them but then shrugging and moving on. After all, I reasoned, it is probably one of those things that isn’t actually going to come anywhere near my life for quite some time. If, indeed ever. It seemed to fall very firmly into the idea of things that Other People do – a bit like abseiling, digging out the basement and having regular manicures.

Then I received an email. From Berlin ( a minor event in itself) and a company called Limemakers. They have designed the Dazzle Lamp which comes as a plain grey light. You then upload a photograph of your choice. The computer does some magic showing you what your image looks like projected onto the light. You then, probably, change your mind and do another one and so on until you have a design you are happy with and then they 3D print it and send you your very own light.

Ta Da! Isn’t that fun. The other, clever, thing, is that the patterns are only printed on to the inside so they only show when the lamp is turned on. When off it’s just a geometric object. You can see all this on the site.

The other thing is that every lamp is unique and made to order. The base of the lamp is concrete and the rest is entirely 3D printed. So when turned off it looks like the pictures above and below. But scroll back up to the top image and the bottom light is what happened when the designer uploaded an image of the traditional London telephone booth.

So now you can play around with your own lights and create the one that’s just right for your colour scheme. Have fun! Here are screenshots of a couple of mine so you can see what the original pattern was:limemakers lights

The next two are created using pictures of my sitting room and my kitchen. What do you think?

  1. Good find. These are pretty cool eh? I’m really interested to see how new tech and design are evolving together, though the end product still needs to be beautiful however it’s made.
