Now it turns out that many of you weren’t taken with the country last week but we’re going there again this week because, well, look at this. It’s in Burnham Market, Norfolk and it’s on the market via The Modern House for £695,000.

It used to be a 1950s bungalow that was completely remodelled and extended by Patrick and Claudia Lynch of Lynch Architects in 2002.  Since then a striking mirrored studio building and car port, also designed by Lynch Architects, have been added.

Isn’t it fantastic? I just love that mirrored studio, it’s such a clever idea and now I want one at the bottom of my garden.

Inside the house there are three bedrooms and a dining or study area.

There is a skylight at the top of the chimney so the moon casts shadows down into the room at night while during the summer the doors can be slid open so the house and garden blend together.

If I could have this in the country I could be quite tempted. It has been featured in books and magazines and if you want to read more about it, then do click the links above. And if you’re having lottery-winning weekend cottage fantasies, I checked – it’s 90 minutes from London…

Right moving on – sadly but we need to – I’m not sure winning the lottery is the most reliable of life plans – what about this? We’ll come back to the city but we’ll stay modern, how about that?

This is a rare example of a barrel-vaulted flat on the Golden Lane Estate with most of its original features intact and you can have it for £575,00 via The Modern House. It’s what you might call small but perfectly formed.

The bedroom can be closed off with the sliding doors and the kitchen has its original layout but with new units while the original concrete floor has been exposed and repainted.

It’s at the back of the estate overlooking the communal gardens and, added bonus, all residents get to use the communal swimming pool as well as the tennis and badminton courts (at preferential rates).

The estate was designed after WWII when the land it stands on was heavily bombed and the Coporation of London needed to find a lot of housing pronto. A competition was announced, the winners of which went on to the Barbican. You can find out more here.

So there you have it. This week we are modern but in both town and country. Which will you choose?

  1. Wow that bungalow is super cool, I’m usually a ‘time worn spaces’ kind of a girl but the mirrors! Plus anything in Burnham market gets my vote, for the weekend only you understand! 🙂
