Mad About . . . Scandinavian Style

Clean whites and monochromes form the basis of the uncluttered Scandinavian style

It’s Scandi week on mad about the house.

Secondly, the new Scandinavian drama has now hit our screens. Fresh from The Killing and Borgen (and Wallander before that) comes The Bridge, which is a mix of Danish and Swedish. Bliss. Well the plot is quite gory but the houses are great.

The basis for this look is monochrome; black, white and grey. It’s about mixing these colours in different materials and textures and lifting it with splashes of colour.  The Finns like citrus brights, the Danes prefer more muted dusty colours. Layer these base colours and add lots of wood; the Scandinavian palette can also be seen as reflection of the world outside.

Finally for the Scandinavian readers among you, I have in on good authority that the Danes like bare windows or plain blinds but the Swedes will have curtains. The Danes lean more towards black, the Swedes navy; the Danes are more architectural, the Swedes are more cottagey. Now I don’t want to get in the middle of a cultural row here, so I’m just repeating what I was told. Feel feel to add your own comments below and we’ll see if we can reach a consensus that way.

Anyway, Swedish, Danish, Finnish or Norwegian, here are a few gorgeous monochrome products to kick you off with a little of your own Scandi Chic.
