Baroque Lamp with Jungle Shade

There is something about this light that really appeals to me. Regular readers will know that I’m a fan of a completely over the top lamp (six foot tall gold palm tree anyone?) and this is somewhat in that genre. The first thing to note is that it’s 90cm tall which makes it too small for a standard floor lamp but then again I love a tall table lamp.

There are probably all sorts of theories about playing with scale to create drama and all that sort of thing, but I just like the proportions of a very tall light on a sideboard or table. This one has a carved wooden base painted in a brass finish (the table might collapse if it was solid brass)  but if the shade was a bit much for your taste you could change it to a plain black one which would also look amazing. It would also work as a short floor lamp but I’m pointing this out as we’ve all done that thing of looking at the picture and forgetting to measure properly. A friend of mine did it last week with a set of shelves that “looked ok in the picture”.

Years ago I had a giant rubber duck in the boys’ shower room as decor, but when I texted the photo of the finished room to a friend I forgot to remove it, and she rang back immediately to ask if I had taken leave of my senses as the shower was clearly too small for anyone other than Ken and Barbie.

I digress – when did I not –  the key to this light would be to have this patterned shade in summer and swap it to a plain one with a gold interior (much like the ones I featured last week) in winter. There we go job done. Money spent. Time to go out and earn some more.

If you like the shade but not the base then I featured some cushions in the same material earlier this year.

  1. I must say that the title got me expecting something “ugly” or dated, but the object ended up being quite the contrary. I love it’s style, so beautiful!!

  2. From the title, I was expecting to dislike this lamp. On the contrary, and much to my surprise, it is somehow refreshingly modern. Thank you for sharing.

  3. I am digging the whole thing. I also need one of the black shades with a metallic interior you’ve mentioned.
