Candlesticks and Hygge

The eagle-eyed among you (well those who follow me on Twitter anyway) will have noticed a certain amount of grumbling recently following two power cuts in a week. Yes, a WEEK. It was like the 1970s round here. And not in a good way. I didn’t get any Angel Delight and there were no suede tasselled handbags lying in the road.

Anyway, this was also the point at which you discover that despite having faithfully bought 50 tealights for 47p from Ikea every trip for the last ten years, you are down to your last four and what’s more there appear to be only three matches in the entire house.

No, there was no swearing at all. There was a fair bit of red wine consumption if I’m honest. And God it was cold so we simply had to go out for dinner. Well, restaurants are warm. And they serve pudding.

So, what with one thing and another I had to start thinking about candles. And not just for Danish hygge (cosy) reasons but for practical ones. Like how much light do they actually give off when you are trying to cook. How do you carry them from one room to another (mainly the loo) without them blowing out. And what if they freakishly fall over when your back is turned and you have left the room (with the other one – to go to the loo) and set fire to the house and by the time you return well, yes you can see all right from the RAGING INFERNO THAT IS LIGHTING UP THE BURNT OUT SHELL THAT USED TO BE THE KITCHEN.

I’m not great with candles.

Anyway, then I saw this mirrored brass candle box from Nordic House and I figured that would protect the house if the candle fell over and, I reasoned, the glass might amplify the flame so there was more light. It’s the perfect thing. And when there isn’t a power cut (and that better be most of the time for the next 10 years) it would look great with a few plants in it.

The following week, I was sent this rather gorgeous number by Style Chapel, who is either extraordinarily kind (or sick of my whingeing, I’m going with the former) which comes with its own space for the matches and is extremely stylish. It is quite a heavy base so shouldn’t blow over in a draught and is good-looking enough to earn a permanent place on the shelf.

Hygge schmygge. You see cosy, I see death and destruction.

  1. Love the mirrored brass candle box ~ I’ve never seen anything like that. I like the other candleholder as well… I’m not much of a candle-using person, but I love the holders and seem to have inadvertently started a collection.
