Desk Chairs

Now that the loft is well underway. Perhaps we’ll just say “underway” at this point. What with No 2 son’s bedroom taking over somewhat. And the rain. And the storms. And the pigeon who’s made a nest and laid two eggs in it right in the middle of what will be the bathroom floor. For those who worry, the builder very carefully moved the nest to the chimney stack where it can remain undisturbed and the pigeon appears very happy with it there. It is waiting for the builders every morning when they arrive. Actually it was there at 5am this morning wearing wellington boots and jumping up and down on the loft floor – which is my bedroom ceiling. I swear I thought it was a burglar who had climbed up there it was so loud. Then the cooing started…

Anyway, desk chairs. I think it’s time to investigate those. I really don’t want a proper office chair. I mean I know they’re ergonomic and all that, but they don’t look right at all. And given that I haven’t sat in a proper office chair for about 15 years I don’t suppose I shall start now.

So what do I want? Well something a bit industrial, probably a bit vintage and something comfortable. I should probably have put that first. Goes without saying really.

The desk will be one long plank of wood (or reclaimed school laboratory worktop – budget permitting) that goes from one side of the room to the other. It should be about 15ft long. The plan is to have two chairs, not necessarily matching but comfortable with each other. As well as a couple of stools. This is the sort of thing we’re aiming for. The windows will be similar only not as tall sadly.

So now I just need to find the right furniture. Actually I already have one very similar to the top image (possibly even two) so perhaps I could just spray the legs brass to bling them up a bit. Then I can splurge on the leather stool. Or perhaps just have one of the Phillipe Starck chairs with one wooden and a leather stool. As I say; a few chairs that aren’t matching but get along like old friends.

  1. Just love the Kartell master chair, had my heart set on them for our garden till I tried one, not v comfy such a shame when they look so good. We have the 675 robin day chairs in our kitchen with the black seat, have had them for over 10 years and just love them so stylish and comfy too, may well be a good option for you!

  2. I was collared by a uni student at the May design series on Sunday and asked to do his questionnaire which was basically about furniture – last question was ‘what is the design world missing?’
and I said ‘an attractive ergonomic desk chair!’
Never seen a nice one and as I result I also sit on an attractive ‘unergonomic’ chair in my home office that I will no doubt pay for in years to come !
