Mad About … Copper

Metallic has been a strong trend for a while now but this year it has softened from gold and silver to softer sheens such as copper and pewter.

I’m a huge fan of copper and really wanted a copper kitchen sink but at the time it was difficult to get matching taps and pipework so I stuck to the usual steel and chrome, but still, every time I see a flash of copper my heart lifts a little.

See what you think. Let’s start gently with a little lighting and I’m sure you all recognise this pendant from Tom Dixon.

On its website Heals says copper fits perfectly with this year’s trend for Rough Luxe:  “Metallic finishes are all the rage in 2013, with copper leading the pack as the top choice for stylish interiors. Copper – whether beaten, aged or super-shiny – also feeds perfectly into the ‘rough luxe’ theme set to dominate interiors this year.”

Here it has been used to clad a wall, which makes a really great feature.

Copper pipework, usually coming from a boiler used to be boxed in or painted over, but these days the trend is to leave it natural. Here it has been used as shelving.

And it works equally well in a bathroom

In fact, the Spanish designer, Jaime Hayon has taken the idea of copper piping and worked it into a range of basins and storage for Bisazza.

Copper bathtubs have, of course, been around for a while. Not that they’re getting any cheaper though.

From a light copper bathroom to one using dark greys, which is equally stunning.

Or this one in a very traditional setting. Of course wouldn’t we all love to have a ceiling this high.

But perhaps we should finish off with two very different kitchens. One more rustic and one very modern. I know which one I prefer.

  1. Hi Kate,

I thought you may be interested in looking at a commission I am currently doing. A lovely client (former buyer for Habitat) has commissioned me to customise a cocktail cabinet with copper! Its not finished yet, but should look very much as it does on the website, but will have handles.
It is only currently showing on the homepage, let the slide show run and it is the 3rd image.
    Hope you like it 🙂

    Sarah
