Maybe it’s because the mad Christmas rush is about to start, maybe it’s the thought of all those bright colours overlaid with glitter and sparkle, but this week, mad about the house is feeling a little like the calm before the storm. And for that reason, we are, this week, mad about muted colours.
This is a colour palette that is particularly suited to the English climate because it takes the colours and washes them out – as if they had been rained on – leaving a series of soft, muted colours that feel strangely calming.
Shades include pale green, duck egg blue, faded rose with pale greys and hues of stone. Throw in lots of natural textures and textiles – unpainted wood, woollen throws and linen cushions.
This room is very monochrome but the textures are natural (concrete and brick) and the colours soft (shades of stone) so it doesn’t feel as stark and industrial as it might do. Imagine a faded pink sofa and lots of large cushions.
The painted bricks in the picture above work really well in this look. I have a current hankering to strip the plaster from my kitchen walls and paint the brick underneath. Here is the look around a fireplace.
Here is a slightly stronger shade of blue but look how it contrasts beautifully with the natural textures used
This bathroom feels instantly very restful and calming
