Mad About . . . Mirrors

Mirror, mirror on the wall . . . in honour of the film Snow White and The Huntsman and also Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts as the wicked stepmother, Mad About the House thinks it’s time to reflect on some magical mirrors.

APPENDISPECCHIO FULL LENGTH

www.gomodern.co.uk

£850

Add the perfect finishing touch to any bedroom

Yes I know it’s very expensive but look at it. It’s gorgeous. Not only can you see yourself full length but you can hang your necklaces/ties/scarves on the side and add them to the outfit as you stand there. Now that’s accessorising darling.

WINDOW MIRROR AND PLANTER

www.grahamandgreen.co.uk

£280

Add some interest to a hall

I have always loved the idea of a hidden window or secret door into another place (rather like Alice Through the Looking Glass) and this paned mirror fulfills all those fantasies. In addition to which, you can add some greenery along the bottom. It’s not for every room in the house, but would be great in a bathroom or a hall. Or even in a bedroom with make-up instead of plants.

ARA WALL MIRRORS

Who is the fairest of them all?

Readers with good memories will remember Haidee’s tapas dishes  appearing on the site back in March, she’s back again with these gorgeous hand mirrors that hang on the wall. With a nod to our grandmothers’ dressing tables, they combine an air of vintage style with the clean frameless shapes. The hand mirrors are called Fair, Grace, Dear, Tilly and Alice. Which one are you?

MIRROR TOP FOLDING TABLE

www.rigbyandmac.com

£95

This folding table table will bring a shine to your drinks

Well, I didn’t actually say the mirror had to be on the wall now did I? This will look great at the end of a sofa, specifically with a Martini resting on top but we’ll settle for a pretty candle as they have put here. Sitting near a lamp it will also bounce the light around prettily too. If you don’t fancy it in there, this is another piece that would work well in a bathroom holding all those jars of lotions and potions we seem to accumulate . . . well if we’re going to be the fairest of them all . . .

ZEBRA PRINT MIRROR

www.notonthehighstreet.com

£180

Not for the faint-hearted

Leopard print is a bit, well, tacky, but Zebra, if used carefully, can look amazing. Besides which it appeals to my love of monochrome. If your style tends towards the over the top then you will love this already, but if you have a fairly minimal approach with few colours then this could really add, as my younger son would say, ” some pzazz” something of which he is very fond. And, as a boy, who won’t go to school if his trousers are too wide in the leg, I would say he knows what he is talking about.

ZOOM ROUND MIRROR

www.heals.co.uk

£140

A drop of magnification

The truth of the matter is that a little magnification can be a good thing in a bathroom, but sometimes those mirrors that flip over to magnify the whole face are just too cruel first thing in the morning. I’m not a huge fan last thing at night either mind. This is altogether kinder. There’s just a little area to magnify which means you can concentrate on the offending spot (as it were) without having to contemplate the ravages of time all over and in glorious technicolour.

GUBI ADNET MIRROR

www.occa-home.co.uk

£475

Designed in the 1950s

Yes, I’m aware that you’re all gasping and muttering at the price but when I tell you that it was designed in the 1950s by Jacque Adnet during his collaboration with the French fashion house Hermes, it all makes a bit more sense. I’m not expecting you to buy it, just to appreciate its beauty. The leather strap comes in tan or black and is in proportion to the size of the mirror you choose.
