Model Buildings by Chisel and Mouse

If you have a big screen then take a moment to look at these images in detail. They are perfect recreations of a huge range of buildings from all over the world, including Battersea Power Station, The Glasgow School of Art, The Guggenheim and The New York Yankees Old Stadium.

They are created by two brothers, Robert and Gavin Paisley, otherwise known as Chisel and Mouse, who began making sculptures for a hobby and have now turned it into a full time job run from their East Sussex studio.

When I started this blog, some three years ago, I decided that I would write a post every single day featuring what I called an Object of Design. I have introduced other features since then, but five days a week, every week, there is an object of design. It might be a chair, a light, or something else useful and beautifully made. These sculptures really sum up the idea behind it for they are all truly objects of design.

“Our sculptures are made of plaster which gives them a reassuring weight and a smooth, cool feel,” they say. “Most feature fine details, such as window frames, etched in metal… and we use a mix of new and old techniques and technologies. We combine traditional sculpting, moulding and casting with CAD and 3D printing to produce our collection.”

The detail is just extraordinary and, while one of their tag lines might be “present for an architect” I think they’re great for anyone. There is such a huge range of buildings in the collection that there’s bound to be one that fits someone you want to buy a present for.

And, if there really isn’t, you can even have your own home made. Admittedly that pushes the price up from around £140 to a starting price of around £1,000 but if imagine if you parents live in an amazing house that you grew up in and it was their wedding anniversary. Or something like that.

Chisel & Mouse London City 5

In addition to individual buildings, and there really are too many to list here, but, go on a few more by subject: Frank Lloyd Wright, Mid Century, Modernist, Art Deco, Townhouses and USA, there are also city scapes and 3D images to hang on the wall.

I definitely know what I’m buying himself next time the present list comes around. The only question is which one? I love the idea of using them as bookends.
