Modern Classic from Pinch Design

9th October 2018

We have been speaking recently about easy pieces to update your home with the seasons and ringing the changes with pots of paint and so on, but sometimes it’s about finding something really special. An investment piece that you know you will love for ever and that can last a lifetime.

So today I wanted to show you the work of Pinch Design. I have known Russell and Oona for years and they recently opened a shop in Pimlico, central London, as well as creating unique designs for Heals. Their work is modern yet classic, made with high quality materials that are built to last.

This is all about sustainable shopping because you aren’t buying something you will chuck out in a couple of years but something that might even make its way down the family. I wrote recently about re-upholstering the sofa that belonged to my Great-Grandmother and these are the sorts of furniture that you buy once and love forever.

That is not just because they are classic designs but also because they work. The sofas are comfortable, the stools age beautifully with time. As Oona said to me recently: “I’m most proud of our Angelo sofa because I’m thrilled that we have (I hope) managed to combine stupid comfort with refined elegance.”

And if that isn’t the perfect description of what we are all looking for in a sofa I don’t know what is. She went on to say: “I have just bought my first pair of Nike Air Force trainers, aged 45, and honestly I’m not sure what I find more comfortable, our sofa or those sneaks, but suffice to say I’m in love with the comfort my everyday is getting from both those channels.”

I’m with Oona. I was slightly older than that when I bought my first pair of trainers (Nike Air Max) and the joy of comfortable shoes was wonderful. I now have three pairs – not all the same make or style – and it’s so wonderful to be able to do those ruddy 10,000 steps we’re all supposed to do these days and not feel like a cripple afterwards. Mind you if I had an Angelo sofa to sink into afterwards I might still be wearing the Prada heels.

Pinch Design also recently started making beds and this, their first, is also very beautiful. And, of course, you will have to change the mattress but if you love the bed itself that can also be a lifetime purchase.

I hate the phrase “as I get older”, so let’s say: as I move through time, I appreciate more and more the pieces that I can love and that will stay with me throughout my life moving from room to room and person to person but always bringing that touch of stupid comfort and refined elegance to my home.

That Emil Dresser. It’s so beautiful. Functional, and interesting. I just don’t have it in me to spend that kind of money on one piece of furniture(7250 pounds).

We have just commissioned our first ever piece of furniture – a dining room table. We feel many store bought tables are devoid of character By chance this summer a small shop opened in our high street selling handmade wooden pieces designed and made by a husband and wife team . We have now visited the sawmill and chosen our Scottish elm from a 300yr old fallen tree to have blackened oak legs. It was a great way to spend a morning. Next week we visit the local workshop to discuss the profile of the legs.Yes this is expensive and we have not taken a holiday this summer but we hope this will be a table that looks and feels wonderful , lasts and lasts and is eventually past on to our kids. We have specifically designed it so that although it will appear to be a single long dining table it is in fact two smaller tables in case we downsize but also so there will be no fall outs when it comes to the kids inheriting it in the future. The whole process has been really fun and exciting and we can’t wait to have our table delivered. This will be our first Christmas where we can all fit round the table comfortably!

I agree about buying investment pieces if you can. All the real investment pieces we’ve moved with us from house to house, many investment have been antique pieces that are so beautifully made and have such patina and interest that they always go with whatever you place them with. Antiques are the original eco-friendly home furnishing don’t you think?

Love their designs. Maybe one day, when I’m rich and don’t have 3 Labradors 😄 But that will never happen!
