Objects of Design #300: Dyke and Dean

Isn’t this a great idea? Build your own light. Dyke and Dean, my latest discovery, sell all sorts of wonderful things (we’ll have a little browse in a minute) but among all the treasures, they also sell the wherewithall to build your own lamps.

Choose from a range of light bulbs, ceiling roses or wall fittings in brass, copper or chrome or bakelite. Then add a brass chain for hanging or some fabric cable in a range of colours and away you go.

It’s such a clever idea. Now, the shop is based in Hastings but they will be in Heals in February in a new venture for the store called The Market, which will be open for two weeks and includes a range of great British designers. I think it will definitely be worth a visit.

Here’s a selection of some of the other things that are available in the store. Prices are mixed – that clock is £655 but the light bulbs are around £12 which, for a fancy bulb, isn’t bad.

Anyway, you can go and have a look yourselves but I thought today would be the perfect day to browse around a new shop from the comfort of your armchair. Preferably with a slice of cake and a glass of something seasonal to hand.
