Bathrooms are often rather plain affairs with the focus on the practical rather than the decorative and customers have, rightly, resisted many recent attempts to bring back colour into the sanitaryware. The memories of that avocado bathroom suite are still too raw for many of us.

However, I’m all for a little bit of decoration if it’s not too over the top and I confess I rather like these basins from Villeroy & Boch. The basin itself is very plain and rectangle which is what makes the rather baroque pattern on the outside all the more pleasing.

As long as you keep the rest of the room quite stark and plain, this will add a lovely little touch. It could even work well in a bathroom with two basins – keep one plain white and use this as its partner as an unexpected flourish.
