Objects Of Design #201: Calico Desk Set

Perfect for the early years

Buying the right desk is tricky as it all depends on how your child likes to work. Do they want to be in the kitchen sitting at the table with you in earshot? In which case the desk is about storage more than work. Or do they prefer to take a laptop into the sitting room? If they do like to be in their rooms then it comes down to how much space is available. I have already included my favourite desk  in a previous post in this series, a folding desk that is perfect for small spaces. My son currently has an old school desk in his room which is great for storage and, with its sloping top, means that he can’t fill it up with clutter. Having said that, he has just started at secondary school and he can’t lean a computer on it either so we may have to think that one through again.

In many ways I think the best solution is to build something into the space. It can be a simple as a piece of wood in an alcove with shelves above or as complicated as you and your bank account want to go.

In the meantime, this is a rather lovely set that includes a desk, stool and drawers and should see them through the primary school years and even when they’re too tall for the desk the stool could carry on as a bedside table.
