Objects Of Design #230: Grace Modern Armchair

the perfect curling up on a winters day chair

I rather like the boxy shape of this chair, with its platform that creates a halfway house between putting your feet up and just raising them slightly. You will need to measure your space carefully for this one though as it’s shown here in a large space and we don’t all live in cavernous lofts. It has a solid beech frame and a ten year guarantee and the cushions are reversible. That might sound obvious but, at the time of writing I am sitting on a cream chair with a slightly stained seat (thanks kids) which won’t turn over as there’s large piece of velcro on the underneath which stops the cushion slipping. You see, what seemed like a good idea in the shop has turned out to cost more in dry cleaning bills.

Choose from either a feather or synthetic filling depending on your budget and your allergies.

The company was set up when the owners, who ran a shop in Fulham, west London, realised that they could sell their products more cheaply if they converted to online only and cut out the overheads. The downside is that you can’t sit on them before you buy, but set that against free delivery and the removal of any old furniture and it may be a compromise you are prepared to make. The owners are at pains to point out that they are trained furniture designers with 25 years experience.

Finally, they give a handy washing tip for anyone who has cotton covers: Wash on a low spin cycle and place the damp covers back on the cushion pads ensuring they are aligned properly. Then let them stand to dry and finish off with a steam iron on the cotton setting if required.
