Objects of Design #273: Wallace Light

I came across this wall light the other day when a client (yes I have those – more details on that in the New Year) whose house renovation I am consulting on, asked me to find her a similar one as this had sold out.

It turns out they are made to order and having tried, and failed, to find another option at a similarly great price – it’s $125 – we have decided to ask the company to make another one. Then I saw the note that said the company was so inundated with orders that they have closed from now until the New Year.

Now that’s quite unusual to take a month off during, what is for many, the busiest time of the year. Further investigation (well all right a bit of Google and some more clicks on their site) revealed that One Forty Three is husband and wife team, Logan and Roxy, who are finishing off a house that someone started building six years ago and making furniture for it along the way.

Turns out there has been a bit of a buzz about them in the US and I can see why. Style maven Emily Henderson has used their lights a couple of times in her projects as well as in her own house (always a good sign).

The couple have done everything themselves; Logan said his father taught him how to make cabinets and the rest he has taught himself. It started out as an Etsy shop and they have since set up their own store.

“Onefortythree started out as a blog about a house my wife and I are finishing (our address number is 143),” he says. “Once we moved in, we needed furniture and lighting. So, I started making my own. I then began making things for my friends and family and have since started selling my pieces online.

“Everything you see here is designed and made, one at a time, by me. I’m constantly making new things and improving old ones so my inventory is always changing and growing.

“My dad taught me how to build cabinets and got me into woodworking when I was very young. In my opinion, he is the best cabinet maker out there. Everything else; welding, upholstery, plywood molding (sic), etc – I learned on my own by trial and error.”

Now, obviously when it comes to lighting that is made in the US it won’t be compatible with the UK and will need rewiring. But given that these pieces are so reasonably priced (and believe me I have been doing a lot of research into brass lighting recently) that shouldn’t rule it out. Or, you could ask Logan if he will make the lights minus the wiring and you can have that done in the UK by your own electrician.

These are only some of the lights that Logan has made. Do go and have a browse around onefortythree. Perhaps if enough of us visit he will start a UK range specially for us.
