Objects Of Design #312: Birch Storage Cube

Shoe storage that doubles up as a bench
Shoe storage that doubles up as a bench

So they’re about to go back to school now and the hall will suddenly be full of shoes, coats, bags, the odd tennis racket and probably a random sock or two. These boxes could sort that out. Made by the Finnish designer Harri Koskinen, you can line them up in the hall so they can double up as a bench at the same time. If you’re really organised, you could put a coat hook above each one so that everything is kept together. Whatever it takes to minimise the chaos at 8am.

By the way, yes these are expensive, but sometimes it’s about taking an idea and adapting it to your own purposes/budget. Also, Koskinen’s Torch Lamp, designed in 1996, has been in MoMA’s permanent collection since 2000, so you might be investing in a future design classic.

  1. The boxes are awesome. They would fit perfectly into the office. Handy space for clothing, shoes and maybe some work related stuff if all other storage space is used (it usually is). How much is it? (I take that the price tag relates to the lamp)
