well designed, good value garden chair

Garden furniture can be ear-bleedingly expensive but every now and then you come across something that manages to be both stylish and affordable. This is that. It stacks for easy storage, there’s a hole in the seat for water drainage, it’s plastic so you can wipe it down with a cloth AND it’s comfortable to sit on. As well as this rather fabulous pink it comes in black and white. My plan? One or two more expensive chairs for comfortable lounging, cocktail sipping, and a couple of these for larger get togethers. We can fight over who gets to sit in which at a later date.

The Ikea PS collection is the company’s design statement and is focused firmly on the more cutting edge of Scandinavian design at the company’s famously affordable prices. The new pieces were launched at Milan last month and some of the pieces look really high end. Remember the days when the fashion journalists first discovered Top Shop and everyone was amazed that they were shopping on the High Street?  Ikea PS is a bit like that. Chosen carefully and mixed in with your existing furniture it will create real impact (and admiration for your bargain-hunting-style-spotting skills).

This year, the company has looked back over the last 60 years of design for its inspiration. There are 46 products – from chairs that double as shoe storage to tableware and candlesticks as well as  outdoor furniture and watering cans in bright modern colours. Here are some of my favourites:

Made from environmentally friendly bamboo with a nod to the 50s this costs £139
this pocket sprung sofa costs £695
The Family coat rack: slide the knobs up and down to suit the person doing the hanging £54.99
this LED lamp folds flat against the wall when it's not needed £39.99
