Rustic Farmhouse Table

It’s said the kitchen is the heart of the home but I disagree. I think it goes further than that. I think it’s actually the kitchen table. That table, whether it’s in the kitchen, the dining room or the sitting room, depending on where you have space for it, is actually the real heart of the home.

It is, essentially, the place where everyone gathers to share a meal. Perhaps once a week in busy homes with teenagers or houses with small children who go to bed early. It doesn’t matter how often you sit round it, it will be there waiting. Waiting for plates to be laid, or homework to be done. For crafting and glue, meetings and meals.

You must choose this table carefully because it will be with you for many years and bear witness to many things. My table is a big old slice of tree that brings a rustic feel to our kitchen which has industrial stainless steel worktops. These are the new rustic farmhouse tables from Home Barn which has been selling vintage pieces for several years now.

Recently, the owners, Sally and Sarah, branched out into creating their own pieces and these tables are the result. They are all made from reclaimed timber salvaged from old buildings that are being demolished and put together by UK cabinet makers.

Sally said: “We started to design and sell our own table in 2010 and most of our stock is vintage and one off  but our customers also wanted a table that looked vintage but that was customisable for their own space and style. We have come up with four designs.”

Prices vary depending on the size and style you want but prices start at £900 for the refectory table at 80cm wide (you can have 100cm if you wish) and you can choose the colour of the legs. Currently dark grey, pale grey and white are offered as well as natural waxed timber. There are also options for an extension leaf and a matching bench. Now don’t say they haven’t tried to think of everything.

  3. Beautiful tables. I specially like the one with the dark grey ‘undercarriage’ (can’t think of the proper name) because it has somewhere you can put your feet should you be so minded. Make sure you get yours in first!
