So yesterday we were at the bottom of the high street and today we are at the top end with the news that Selfridges has launched its very first homeware range: Makers for Selfridges. The London store approached Friends & Co, a design and architecture pr agency, and asked them to put together a selection of eight designers who would apply the distinctive signature yellow to one of their existing products or create a new one.

The idea, said Georgia Frost of Selfridges, was to find the people who are the best at what they do and create an exclusive collection for the Oxford Street store.

Some of the designers will be familiar to you: Charlene Mullen, Another Country and John Julien. Others will be new. Belinda Fisher, of Friends & Co, said the company drew on 20 years of industry knowledge to put together a list of designers.

“Charlene Mullen had done a cushion for Selfridges to mark the 2012 Oympics and the design was of the shop front,” she said. “It was a short step to decide to take some of the people who were included in that original drawing walking past the shop and just give them a yellow shopping bag.”

Charlene’s designs can now be seen on the teapot, cup and saucer and mug which form part of the range. Some of the other pieces were discovered more by chance.

“I went to the Crafty Fox market to see a friend of mine who was selling beef jerky and on the stall opposite was a company selling the most amazing scented candles.

“We put her together with a ceramicist to create this black pepper and soy wax candle in its white pot with a simple yellow stripe.”

The rest of the range includes a small mixing bowl with a yellow stripe, a pestle and mortar and a bag with yellow detailing. Another Country have created a black sugar bowl and pair of pinch pots with a wooden spoon that has a yellow handle.

The pieces will form part of Selfridges permanent collection with more to come next year. “We wanted to celebrate the Selfridges selection, which is our heritage range and food is a huge part of that,” said Georgia. “That is based around using small suppliers and finding people who do the best of what they do.

“We brought that ethos into the homeware range and added a tiny bit of yellow. It is the first time we have developed our own homeware range and we will do more.”

I sense a little seasonal shopping coming on. I definitely fancy that mug and I wouldn’t say no to the pinch pots either. What do you think?
