Every room should have some old wood in it. Whether it’s just the floorboards or a few vintage chopping boards, wood brings warmth and character to a space. It’s particularly important in a kitchen where there are often lots of cold surfaces and hard lines.
I have an intense dislike of most modern bar stools. They might be comfortable but, in my opinion, they rarely bring character to a space and I often prefer to seek out something either old or even slightly rustic.
It can be quite hard to find good stools that look as if they have had a life. My own came from ebay and were a lucky find. We also have a couple of singer sewing machine stools but they’re rarer than hen’s teeth these days and even more expensive.
These stools, from Discover Attic, are made from old chapati boards with a new iron base. That means that every one is slightly different and some will look a bit more “used” than others. They cost £85. What do you think?
If I needed more stools I would definitely snap up a couple of these. Below is a picture of mine. Although I have a very modern stainless steel worktop, the leather handles and vintage stools provide a contrast and stop it being too hard and modern.
I love vintage stuff! All my favourite bars have a wooden stool.
I just bought a vintage wooden stool for my living room. Definitely a good idea to get one, especially if you can get a custom-made one.
Nice article.
love the stools! Can’t help but notice the silver wallpaper you have on your kitchen ceiling?
Thank you Angie, they’re actually tin tiles which are stuck on. I love them!
Very nice for a good price. I was thinking of something similar in my apartment!
Love these stools and great price – I have a black kitchen and think they would look perfect, on wish list!
Those are nice stools – great price too!
After a long hard search, we finally sourced some wooden stools with an oft inconsidered part of the stool – the footrest. It is higher on one side which enables the children to sit comfortably without their feet dangling. They are also low enough for one to sit with knees underneath the worktop. So many stools are far too high for average kitchen worktop which tends to be 900mm high.
Yes – totally agree! Old wood has such character and warmth and fits in anywhere. I’ve just noticed your ceramic black and white pots. Have you checked out http://www.myerhalliday.co.uk ceramics. I think maybe you’d like!
Me too ! Is hating modern bar stools a bona fide interior designer *thing* … along with a hatred of feature walls ?
My trick is to use ply – try the Artek stools for a budget busting option or get some made (surprisingly easy).
LOVE them, what a clever idea & totally agree most bar stools are not at all nice
good price for those lovely looking things!
Really like those stools. On a completely different note (because I couldn’t work out how to contact you directly) have you seen the new Mutina Puzzle tiles by Barber and Osgerby? You will love them!
With you all the way on wood love!
