Objects of Design #160: Glass Fronted Wall Cabinet

I may have mentioned before that I do love a bathroom that doesn’t necessarily look like a bathroom. By which I mean the addition of a battered old leather armchair, the freestanding bath in front of the fireplace – that sort of thing – click here to see what I mean – so this vintage looking cupboard is perfect.

In a room where everything tends to be very sleek and modern, a touch of the unexpected can look great. Now, obviously if you’re going to have a glass-fronted cabinet you will need to either monitor who goes into your bathroom or what goes in the cupboard. Or perhaps you won’t – probably depends on how British and repressed you are.

After all, how many of us have never opened someone else’s bathroom cupboard and had a little peep inside? Come on own up I’m sure it’s not just me. In fact, that reminds me: I recently went for a fabulous lunch with the lovely people from Remodelista. It was at Pips Dish in Hoxton (if you can gather a group of ten you must go) and in the bathroom, there is a cupboard with a label saying simply Open Me.

All very Alice in Wonderland isn’t it? Inside the cupboard were some beautiful objets and treasures which the owner, Pip, has put there for guests to peek at. After all, as he pointed out, he also used to nose about in other people’s cupboards when he was a child so he used the idea in his restaurant.

Anyway, whatever you chose to put in your bathroom cabinets is up to you. I am merely suggesting that this is a very lovely place to put them. And if you find, as is often the case with Graham and Green sadly, that it’s out of stock, keep an eye out for a vintage one that you can paint yourself and even fix wallpaper to the back, as has been done here.

As I say, it’s all about the inspiration not just the price tag.
