September, the month that signals the end of the summer, even if the good weather doesn’t end there. It is the month that’s all about returning – to school, back home, to the office. In France, it’s so significant that it’s often not even called September. Instead it’s known as La Rentree (the return). Everything is put off to be dealt with then and everyone knows what it means. For years after we leave school the start of the new year still feels like September rather than January.
So, for La Rentree this year it’s time to look at kids’ rooms. That’s not to say that there will be nothing here for the adults. Take these shelves for instance, I’d love to put them in almost any room of the house or on the landing. But they would be great as part of the decor of a child’s room.
They’re designed by Kostas Syrtariot, a Greek who lives in Venice. For more details click here. But he’s not the only person to be inspired by the idea of trees as bookshelves. Olivier Dolle has made this, which I also love (and if it didn’t cost €3,500 I would have one tomorrow)
Or there is this, from Icelandic designer Thorunn Arnadottir. A series of boxes which, when added to a decorated wall, create the idea of a tree. This one costs €350 but you’ll have to paint your own wall if you want the same effect.
Finally what about these? You can put these in a hall, with hats and keys on the shelves, or in a home office with files.
Made from aluminium, these shelves also work well as a room divider.
Or even, as September is for the children, for toys. As you return to your books at the rentree, I hope you will like these shelves to get you in the mood.
