Objects of Design #40: Pippy Oak Reader Side Bench

Over the last few months I have been seeing a lot of furniture which has been created to reflect its natural roots. This table, which could also be used as a bench or a console, is a simple slice of tree which has been left in its raw state with folding metal legs attached, giving it a slight industrial feel, but with a refined edge.

The bark and the wavy edge has been left intact as have the so-called cats paws, which are the cluster of pips, or knots, that give the furniture its name.

The dimensions are 1400mm long by 440mm high. The width will vary slightly as it depends on the size of the tree, but is roughly 300 to 400mm. If you have a tight space it might be best to ring them up and discuss what you need.

Matthew and Andrew Galvin are based in Yorkshire and set up their company in March 2012 building on their father’s 61 years of experience as a cabinet maker.

I just love this table and, at £560, I think that’s a really great price for such a piece.
