New Shop Discovery: Houseof.Com

It seems apt that after posting about the forthcoming trends as seen at Milan last week, I find a new interiors brand that is using all those colours to showcase its lighting collection. So this post is twofold – have a look at the lighting from houseof and check out the colours (and arches) with a view to seeing how you might feel about putting them in your own homes.

Houseof was founded by Helen White (formerly of made.com) who met Michael Jones when they both worked at BHS. The collection currently comprises lights and sidetables but there will be more coming in July, including some really exciting rugs full of colour and curves, which are made in India.

They design everything themselves and the lights are made in China. But they also want to offer a more personal services than you get with many online brands so customer service is, they claim, absolutely integral to the whole brand. They want to know everything from you about what you like, don’t like, how they did and what else they can help with.

They want, says Michael, for customers to have that feeling you get when you walk into your local coffee shop and the barista remembers your name and what you usually drink.

To that end the products are tightly curated with the aim of creating a collection that will work in every room and in every scenario from guest room to study, sitting room and bedroom.

So as well as ceiling lamps and pendant lights, table and task and a collection of colourful shades, many of the designs come in eight colours (all on trend) so you can find the one you want and incorporate it into your own scheme.

This season colours include brass and chrome, black and white as well as coral, pink, olive and cobalt and charcoal. So yes there are some really new and fashionable colours but the classics are there as well.

The pair are keen that lighting takes centre stage in an interior design scheme rather than being, as is often the case, bolted on at the end.

“Lighting is often overlooked,” says Helen. “It’s the last thing people think about yet getting it wrong can negatively affect the atmosphere of a room.”

The other key aim of the business is that the lighting should be affordable. Now, of course, everyone has a different idea of what that means but these are not mass-produced, come in fashionable colours and prices start at £40 for the ribbed concrete table lamp (also called fluting this is another strong trend especially in glass) making this an affordable way to incorporate a trend rising to £180 for a colourful floor lamp an £200 for a dramatic curving pendant light.

Bathroom lighting is on its way and as well as the rugs there will be more furniture and accessories in time.

Michael also says he is working on a project to make the whole online shopping experience much more personal and inspirational so if you have any ideas as to what would help you find the shopping online better then do add them in the comments below and I’ll pass them on.

I’ll leave you to browse the collection. There are several great pieces but the coloured metal pendant ceiling lights in a range of colours are great for kids rooms and kitchens, while the opal disk ceiling light is fabulous for anyone who has a dining room.

  5. I’ve bought two pendants for £40 a pop and they look amazing (not up yet tho), and came really quickly in well packaged (without excessive plastic). So far, I recommend.
