10 Best Rugs

The first Thursday of the month (or whatever day you happen to be reading this) means it’s time for my round of the ten best… this time we’re looking at the 10 best rugs that are around at the moment, new out, classics, just stuff that I like etc. I have chosen them because I think you will like them too. So, in no particular order: the 10 best rugs are:

POPPYFIELD RUG

£125

French Connection

It is a slight mystery to me why I don’t own this. It is everything I like in a rug – pink, patterned, faded, vintage looking and large. It now comes in two sizes as well – medium and large. Perfect under a dark grey sofa. Or on a white floor – both of which I have. Mind you – also good with natural floorboards and adding a splash of muted colour to an all-white Nordic scheme.

H&M PATTERNED RUG

£14.99

H&M

Now this is such a clever idea. I spied this rug on instagram on the house.by.the.sea account and immediately assumed it was a very expensive stair runner. You know how I love a patterned stair runner. Well imagine, when she said it was three rugs from H&M joined together. Genius and at £14.99 a rug so affordable. I’m practically ripping the carpet of my stairs as we speak. I shan’t because it came from another company who is also included in this list but you know what I mean. But if you have stairs then it can be worth a little lateral thinking.

EMBOSSED JAE BY 2LGs

£1,500

Floor Story

This is heaven isn’t it? This embossed rug was inspired by the wallpaper that the 2LGs, Russell and Jordan, found in heir house when they were refurbishing. I love the idea of seeing a wallpaper and deciding to turn it into a rug. The background is wool but the pattern is made from bamboo and is slightly higher giving a change of texture and height to this rug. This picture has been slightly faded so go and check out the other images on the site as it’s a much richer colour than this implies.

ALMERIA BY LINIE DESIGN

from £455

Woven

Sometimes you just want a plain rug. But then it’s good if it has a little twist. A little something to lift it above the ordinary and this lovely charcoal grey rug has that pink fringe. And look at the skirting board – that’s a good idea and one we hadn’t thought of isn’t it? I think that might totally be a thing – paint the skirting to match the rug. We’ve already decided (all right I have) that white skirting boards are not necessary and that they should be painted to match the walls but how about making a feature of them and doing them an unexpected colour. After all, in Victorian houses the skirting boards are often rather tall and lovely. And if they’re just plain and modern then all the more reason to dress them up a little. Let’s ponder that for a while shall we?

MAKE ME A RUG

£ varies according to carpet and size

Sometimes, none of the rugs are quite right. Or they’re the wrong size. Or you just wish you could make your own so you could add that little missing something. So check out this place. I had this zebra rug from them earlier this year and it’s a great way to make something a little bit different or more personalised for your decor. You can choose from lots of patterns or plain carpets, customise the border and job done.

MISSONI HOME SAPPORO RUG

£2388

Go Modern

As you know I always try to include a mix of prices and styles in this post and this is the price one! But it’s just fabberless isn’t it. Outrageously huge flowers but all in black and white so you can put it with anything. As, indeed, they have done in this image. I might pare this down a little bit – although that brass coffee table is amazing with it – but generally speaking. If I had £3K then I so would…

YOLANDA

£159

made.com

The made.com design goes from strength to strength and this new rug is a case in point. Yolanda comes in either this teal or dark grey and has a a fashioned faded vintage feel to it. The company has recently changed its textile provider and is sharing factory space with some very high end companies. I cannot reveal more but do take a look at the new collections. And if you keep a close eye on the site and you fancy a bit of navy then you might see a rather nice rug from a capsule edit by you know who that should be coming online sometime this month. I’m just going to say madeaboutthehouse and leave it at that – and that’s not a typo!

SAHARA MEDALLION

£25

Urban Outfitters

This isn’t actually a round rug but I like the way the design runs off the edges and when I first saw it I did just assume it was round. I’ve mentioned urban outfitters before – they do some great things and it’s not where everyone thinks of first so you can get some things that other people don’t have. Also this is £25 – you could follow the H&M example above and sew a few together if you had a big room. This one measures 5ft by 7ft or 152cm by 213cm, in case you were wondering.

DIANO WOOL RUG

£49

La Redoute

I love this! It’s such a good idea I don’t know why I haven’t seen more of it. This would be the perfect bedside rug and it’s wool and it’s less than 50 quid. I currently have a rather dusty old sheepskin that has seen better days and I think one of these would be so much better. It totally fits in with the Mad philosophy of using materials and patterns in unexpected ways and it comes in two shades of grey – I know this picture is rather misleading but perhaps they will get more in stock.

ROAR AND RABBIT WABI SABI

£649

westelm

That gorgeous shade of blush pink is going nowhere so if you like it but have been holding back then restrain no longer. It’s a stayer. I love this rug by Roar + Rabbit and just wish I had a bit of spare floor to put it on. It will go with so many more colours than you think – including green, navy and dark grey. It looks like a piece of art. In fact, since I’ve run out of floor perhaps I could hang it on the wall.

I hope you like these rugs. If you aren’t sure what size to buy or how to arrange them then you might like my post on The Rules of Rug Layout.

  1. The rugs made of wool win over those made from other fibres ! After the design’s visual attraction, I think about what the rug is made from. Wool is anti static, fire retardant and insulating as well as natural and renewable.

  2. Thank you! Could you do a post on round rugs? I have a lovely white tulip table and wanted a round seagrass or similar rug, but totally failed to find one. Thank you, Robin

  3. I have the huge diano rug in my lounge and it is much admired. It feels wonderful under bare feet and the cats and dog love it too.Having had it for nearly a year it still looks good and is very easy to keep clean.
I’m definitely interested in the French Connection one for the bedroom.

  4. The ones I like the most are: Sahara Medallion by Urban Outfitters, H&M Patterned rug and Diano Wool Rug – which kind of gives a soft, warm and cozy feel – would definitely love them in my home! Thanks for the round up Kate!

  5. The poppyfield and yolanda are definitely my favorites. The others are nice but I wouldn’t want to live with them. Give me a classic oriental or Belgian rug that will age but never get old.
