Objects of Design #321: Five Finds from Etsy – Storage

I do love good storage. Everything works better in a house if there’s good storage. When we moved into this house I was determined that we would create enough space for everything and still have empty cupboards. Well, we didn’t quite manage that but having lived in several houses with either no cupboards or small, badly arranged cupboards, this house certainly has storage in every room and we are adding to it all the time. I’m particularly fond of the spice drawer I created last week.

Anyway, in the spirit of January’s domestic detox and the general decluttering that is going on at this time of year (takes your mind off the fact that everyone’s talking about their diet and drinking (or lack of) here are five storage finds from Etsy for you to think about. Or possibly even buy.

These bags are made to order with custom-printed fabric, lined with heavyweight linen and leather handles. Prices vary but start at around £31.

Fans of the industrial look will love the furniture made by this Manchester-based company. In addition to shelves and storage boxes there are also desks and tables. You can keep the wooden planks in their natural state or whitewash them. Likewise you can have the metal supports stripped of any paint or kept in their natural state.

Sticking with the industrial feel, an object that combines storage and seating is always a winner. Use this for shoes and wellies in a hall or blankets and bedding on a landing.

Next up I know it’s January and everyone’s boring on about how they’re not drinking but hey, they will be soon. And anyway, they’ll need somewhere to store all that wine they’re not drinking in the meantime won’t they? So there’s this. Made by Parris Furniture in Emsworth.

And finally (to coin a phrase) sometimes you just want a decent set of hooks that are strong enough and large enough to hold as many coats as you will inevitably sling over them. This is the sort of thing.

  1. I actually bought one of Naturalcity’s storage benches and a matching console table for our hallway. The guys there were great at advising on bespoke sizing etc. They can make anything you like if you ask too although their Etsy shop has lots to choose from as well as their website http://www.naturalcityfurniture.co.uk. Keep it up chaps!

  2. I have known Carla for years and she creates fantastic pieces, from vast walls of shelves to small bespoke pieces. From domestic coffee tables to commercial installations. She is also a pleasure to work with.
