Black and White Accent Chair by Rhonda Drakeford of Darkroom

It’s been a while since I poked my head round the virtual door of the made.com showroom and when I did I found lots of goodies. This chair is a fabulous piece and one that looks so much more expensive than it is.

Chairs are notoriously hard to make – remember they have to be supportive and comfortable before, or as well as, looking good so there’s a lot to focus on. Mies van der Rohe, creator of the Barcelona, said a chair is almost as hard to build as a skyscraper.

The Knox is a great little accent chair. It’s mid-size so will fit in lots of spaces, the lack of arms means that it doesn’t dominate the space and the bold geometric pattern, designed by Rhonda Drakeford, one half of Darkroom, is both classic and modern. Black and white will never go out of style and this fresh take on the classic geo design gives it a little more personality.

In addition to this chair, which costs £199, she has also collaborated with them on a couple of tiled tables – perfect for the garden but also inside and a rug. I saw the table at a book event I did last weekend in Birmingham and was admiring it without realising where it had come from. The capsule collection is finished off with a rug in their distinctive split shift pattern that matches the chair.

I’m a huge fan of the way made collaborates with other designers to a) bring their work to a wider audience but also make their designs accessible when it comes to the price points. If I could squeeze another chair into my house it would be this one. I’m sure I can somewhere….
